ScreenPlay Pro HD

Subtitles are supported for the ScreenPlay Pro HD in several ways. With ripped DVDs stored in either ISO or VIDEO_TS directory, subtitles are supported as part of the DVD.

However, you can also include subtitles with other formats.

For instance, your AVI or MPG files can also show subtitles on the ScreenPlay Pro HD. All you need to do to have the ScreenPlay automatically pick up the subtitle is to include the subtitle file in the same directory as the AVI or MPG. The srt file can be in UTF-8, Ansi, or Unicode txt format. If one of the formats is not working for you, try a different one. You can convert it by open srt file with "notepad" and save as the file type you want. In the case of Unicode, it must be a properly encoded file (notepad will automatically convert it if it isn't).

The MKV format also supports subtitles.

Making subtitle files[]

There are many subtitle programs, but you need one that will create .srt (such as with subripper), .sub, .idx, .ssa, or .smi files.

If the subtitle has more than 2 lines, the descenders will be cut off. So try to keep the subtitles to 2 lines if possible.

Multiple subtitles[]

If you include multiple subtitles in the same directory at the .AVI or .MPG file, you will be prompted as you start the video for the name of the subtitle file that you want to use IF more than one name match the name of the video you are playing. You could name your subtitle files something like "" and "" for instance for an AVI file named Aladdin. This would result in it asking you which subtitle to use. If you just had one named "" then it would automatically use it.

Be aware that you may end up with unexpected subtitle options if you have multiple ones in the directory. For instance, "Back to the Future Part" will appear as an option for "Back to the Future Part I.avi" and "Back to the Future Part II.avi" because the file name matches up to the extension. So it is better to make each file a completely unique name.

MKV format can store multiple subtitles. You can use a program like Avi-mux to take an XVid encoded AVI file and add the .SRT subtitles. Be sure to add them in the order that you want them to appear. The MKV format cycles through all of the subtitles in the order you put them as you press the subtitle button on the remote. With tests from subtitles in the MKV format, I've found that the .AVI + .SRT works better than an .MKV with integrated .SRT.

Non English Subtitles[]

Some special characters can be displayed by the screenplay. Many of them cannot. I tried using .SRT files created in notepad and saved out with either "Unicode", "Unicode Big-Endien", or "UTF-8" encoding. You can select the encoding option when the save dialog box appears. Above it, select "all files" and be sure to include .SRT as the extension in the filename. If you use Subripper, it will give you the option to save the file in unicode when you save it.

I have created a sample SRT file that contains all of the foreign characters that I could determine which would and wouldn't work. Here is the list as of version 1.8 of the firmware. Earlier versions did not show as many.
